New voting scheduled for Inner Manipur seat following repolling order; fresh ballots to be cast on Monday

Polling stations in this constituency in conflict-ridden Manipur experienced significant violence on Friday during the initial phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed for a redo of voting in 11 booths within the Inner Manipur seat, following reports of violence during the initial phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The fresh voting is scheduled for Monday from 7am to 5pm, as stated in an order issued by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manipur.

The ECI has declared the previous poll held on April 19, 2024, in these 11 polling stations as null and void, appointing April 22, 2024, for the fresh polling. The specified booths for the re-vote are: Sajeb (A), Khurai Thongam Leikai, Bamon Kampu (North-A), Bamon Kampu (North-B), Bamon Kampu (South West), Bamon Kampu (South East), Khongman Zone-V (A), Irioshemba, Iroishemba Mamang Leikai, Iroishemba Mayai Lekai, and Khaidem Makha.

Manipur, grappling with ethnic tensions since last May, particularly between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has witnessed over 200 casualties due to ongoing violence, with the conflict still unresolved. In light of this, the Outer Manipur seat, one of Manipur's two Lok Sabha constituencies, participated in the first phase of voting on Friday and is set to vote again in the second phase on April 26.
