The IMD has issued an 'orange alert' for Sunday and Monday in the national capital due to anticipated heavy rainfall.
The India
Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts significant rainfall in Delhi over
the next two days, following the city's record-breaking downpour on Friday, the
highest in 88 years. An 'orange alert' has been issued for heavy rainfall on
Sunday and Monday.
The regional
meteorological center in New Delhi reports that Saturday will experience
moderate rain and thunderstorms, predicting a "generally cloudy sky with
moderate rain/thunderstorms."
On Sunday
and Monday (June 30 and July 1), moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms
and gusty winds of 30 to 40 km/h is expected.
Delhi
experienced 228.1 mm of rain on Friday, the highest for June since 1936, with
further showers anticipated over the weekend, according to meteorologists cited
by PTI. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded this amount in the 24-hour period
ending at 8:30 am on Friday, over three times the average June rainfall of 74.1
mm, and the highest June rainfall in at least 16 years.
Experts note
that such extreme weather events are increasingly common in Delhi, which
typically receives about 650 mm of rainfall during the entire monsoon season.
The heavy rain on Friday alone accounted for one-third of the season's total so
far.
