The state's police reported that he took this drastic action immediately after learning of his wife's death in the hospital.
Shiladitya
Chetia, a senior IPS officer serving as the Secretary of the Home and Political
Department in the Assam government, reportedly took his own life on Tuesday.
State police indicated that he made this tragic decision shortly after learning
of his wife's passing in the hospital, where she had been receiving treatment
for cancer.
GP Singh,
the Director General of Police in Assam, publicly announced the officer's
death. He confirmed that Chetia's suicide occurred just minutes after his wife
succumbed to her long battle with cancer. Singh expressed that the entire Assam
Police force is deeply mourning the loss.
In a
statement, the Assam Police Chief said, "In a tragic turn of events, Sri
Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary of the Home and Political Department
of the Assam Government, took his own life this evening, just minutes after the
attending physician confirmed his wife's death following a long battle with
cancer. The entire Assam Police family is deeply grieving."
As reported
by the Assam Tribune, Chetia, a 2009 batch IPS officer, had been on leave for
the past four months, likely coping with his wife's illness. Despite being
rushed to a hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Before his
role as Secretary in the Assam government, Shiladitya Chetia served as the
Superintendent of Police in the Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts. Authorities
are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
