The police also suspect that Mihir Shah, currently evading capture, was intoxicated during the incident. Authorities are awaiting his blood test results.
In a tragic
incident in Mumbai's Worli, a speeding BMW, driven by the 24-year-old son of a
senior leader from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, collided with a scooter,
resulting in the death of a woman. Police have identified the driver as Mihir
Shah, who is currently evading capture. Authorities suspect he was intoxicated
at the time of the crash, and his blood test results are pending.
The accused,
Mihir Shah, is the son of Rajesh Shah, a deputy leader of Shiv Sena in
Maharashtra's Palghar district. Rajesh Shah and his driver, Rajendra Singh
Bijawat, are currently in police custody. Charges have been filed under the new
criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not
amounting to murder, rash driving, and destruction of evidence, along with
provisions from the Motor Vehicles Act.
The BMW
involved in the accident is registered in Mihir Shah's name. According to
police, both Mihir and his driver were in the car at the time of the incident.
The previous night, Mihir had been drinking at a bar in Juhu. On the way home,
he requested the driver to take him on a long drive. They ended up in Worli,
where Mihir insisted on driving. Shortly after taking the wheel, the speeding
BMW collided with a scooter.
Kaveri Nakva
and her husband Pradik Nakva, residents of Worli's Koliwada area, were on the
scooter. The couple, who are fish sellers, were returning from Sassoon Dock
when the BMW hit their two-wheeler. The impact threw them into the air, and
they landed on the SUV's bonnet. As the car continued to speed, Kaveri Nakva
was run over. The car fled the scene, and Kaveri was later pronounced dead at
the hospital, while Pradik sustained minor injuries.
Following
the crash, Mihir called his father before switching off his phone. Four police
teams are actively searching for him. The investigation has uncovered attempts
to destroy evidence, including scratching off a Shiv Sena sticker from the
car's windshield and removing one of the car’s number plates. However, police
were able to track the vehicle using CCTV footage from the area.
Maharashtra
Chief Minister and Shiv Sena Leader Eknath Shinde described the incident as
"unfortunate" and pledged that the law would take its course.
"Law will take its own course, everyone is equal before law. I have spoken
to the police and strict action will be taken," he stated.
This
incident echoes a similar case in Pune, where two young engineers died in a
drink-driving accident involving a Porsche. The minor driver in that case,
after consuming alcohol, crashed the car, leading to his prominent realtor
father, mother, and grandfather being arrested for allegedly attempting to
destroy evidence.
