"Profoundly Grieved": Another Student's Passing in the US, Indian Authorities Initiate Investigation

"Since the start of 2024, no fewer than 10 students or individuals of Indian descent have passed away in the United States."

In Ohio, a tragic incident has occurred with the passing of an Indian student, Uma Satya Sai Gadde, prompting an investigation initiated by the Indian Consulate in New York. This recent loss adds to a series of sorrowful events impacting the Indian community in the United States.

Expressing profound sorrow, the Consulate General of India in New York conveyed their condolences for the untimely demise of Mr. Uma Satya Sai Gadde, a student from India studying in Cleveland, Ohio. They reassured ongoing support for Gadde's family in India, facilitating arrangements for the repatriation of his remains.

Since the start of 2024, several distressing incidents involving Indian or Indian-origin individuals have surfaced, raising concerns within the community about their safety. Notable cases include the tragic shooting of 34-year-old classical dancer Amarnath Ghosh in St. Louis, Missouri, the untimely demise of 23-year-old Indian-American student Sameer Kamath at Purdue University, and the assault on 41-year-old IT executive Vivek Taneja in Washington.

Vivek Taneja's passing marks the seventh such incident in recent months, prompting the Indian Embassy in Washington to address these alarming trends. In collaboration with other Indian consulates, they organized a virtual session engaging Indian students from across the US to discuss strategies for student well-being and fostering community ties.

Led by Charge d’Affaires Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan, the interaction involved around 150 office bearers from Indian Student Associations representing 90 universities, highlighting the importance of unity and support within the diaspora.
