AAP has asserted that there will be no alteration in the party's leadership, even if it entails Mr. Kejriwal serving as the chief minister from jail.
In New Delhi, the Aam Aadmi
Party (AAP) leaders and supporters are set to participate in a 'samuhik upwas'
or collective fasting today, protesting against the arrest of Delhi Chief
Minister in a corruption case linked to the city's liquor policy. Here are the
latest developments on this significant issue:
1. AAP leader Gopal Rai announced that supporters of Arvind Kejriwal
from across India and abroad will join the party's fasting initiative.
"People can observe the fast from their homes to show solidarity with the
Delhi Chief Minister," he stated.
2. All AAP MLAs and office-bearers will assemble at Jantar Mantar for
the mass fasting at 11 am. Increased security measures have been implemented
along the protest route, anticipating a substantial turnout, which might affect
traffic in parts of central Delhi due to heavy barricading.
3. Last month, the Aam Aadmi Party had called for a 'gherao' of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi's residence, resulting in several AAP leaders and
workers, including women, being detained by the police during the protest.
4. AAP has criticized the BJP for the timing of the arrest, alleging
that it aims to impede Mr. Kejriwal's campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha
election. Ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj affirmed that despite the
Chief Minister's detention, he continues to issue orders from the ED's custody,
assuring Delhi residents of his unwavering focus on their welfare.
5. Despite Mr. Kejriwal's arrest, AAP maintains there will be no change
in leadership, even if it means he continues to function as Chief Minister from
prison. The BJP has dismissed this as a "work from jail plan"
gimmick.
6. Mr. Kejriwal's arrest has fostered unity among the opposition, which
had been more prominent in recent times due to internal discord.
7. Demonstrating solidarity, the INDIA alliance organized a massive
rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, accusing the BJP of undermining the opposition
through central investigative agencies.
8. Mr. Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in connection with the alleged
liquor policy scam, having evaded nine summons from central agencies. He has
been conducting government affairs from the ED's custody since then.
9. The Enforcement Directorate has implicated the AAP leader as a
"conspirator" in the now-defunct policy, alleging that bribe money
funded AAP's election campaigns.
10. In connection with this matter, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and
Sanjay Singh, alongside Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, have faced
arrests. Opposition figures dismiss these accusations and criticize the BJP-led
central government for manipulating investigative bodies such as the ED and CBI
for political purposes.
